Friends new job

A friend of mine has a new job and has already complained that she worked a day shift then night shift the next day. I told her as long as there's 11 hours between they can do that.

Now she is complaining of working every weekend on nightshift . I've asked what does her contract state and she says nothing. I told her that a lot of people work weekends and every weekend. She said this is night shift though I'm like so a lot still do it. She is saying she is going to complain to work.

I don't see a problem with work making her work every weekend. I have asked what her contract says regarding hours but I doubt there will be much to force employer to change shifts. Am I right

If she complained to me, she'd find herself umemployed.

I wouldn't be stupid enough to leave that flexibility is part of the job requirements out at interview though, as are weekend work and foreign travel (live music events).

If she should be on a set shift, however, even if this was verbally agreed, they should morally be sticking to that. The difficulty for your friend may be proving this.

  • In the nicest respect, Let her complain and see if they are just another number at this stage - if she ain't happy, she ain't happy. You're opinions aren't going to change anything if friend has any sense. Just because you like your job doesn't give you cause to expect others too be just like this. You are the friend a listening ear only AS you were not at the interview and neither are you privy to their work terms. Sorry.

Personally why should anyone stay in job years when unhappy - does more harm then ever good if you didn't already know that.

I told her that they can let her go if she has worked under two years and I have a feeling the way she wrote it the info that she has complained a few times. So I suspect if she companins more she will be let go of.

She probably has a contract but never read it properly.

I'm trying to help her out.

Help her out by providing a sympathetic ear when she wants to have a rant, or help her out by providing advice that could prevent her getting the sack, even if it's advice she doesn't want to hear?

You may have to decide which.

Personally I default to the first and I only give the second if I'm specifically asked for it.
