Porting number query

Quick question if I may.
Today I am porting my existing number from Giffgaff to O2.
This morning I woke up to find my old SIM has no signal. Great I thought. Swapped my new SIM into the phone but it still has the old number. When I dial my old number I get the "This number is not recognised" message.
I've contacted O2 and they've reassured me that this is normal and it will work by 6pm. Is that right?
Every time I've done a number port, it's been instant. I replace SIM, reboot phone and I'm off.
My spider sense is tingling but they say it's entirely normal.

It is not always instant. Just turn it on every hour or so and it should work eventually.

Phew, thank you. I'd hate to lose my number for days0
