Especially single young mothers, the TVL goons see them as easy pickings.

I did not have any reason not to let them in. They were quite pleasant at the door.

Of course they were, they wanted to gain access into your home. Most door to door con artists will come across as pleasant to gain your confidence.

Just because you had a tuned in aerial doesn't prove guilt. You could use it to listen to digital radio through the TV screen. Just because I have milk in the fridge doesn't mean I have a cow in the spare bedroom.

It's a life lesson you've learnt the hard way OP. I bet you'll certainly think before letting strangers in ever again. Never let TVL goons in and film them right from the outset so nothing can be made up such as them saying you said yes to having a TV. If you got their vehicle registration plate you could have fitted them up for driving without insurance as they often use a personal vehicle with undeclared use for work.

You can bounce back from this OP but it depends just how hungry you are to do that. A good start would be to join the TVL resistance and get your story out there to prevent as many people as possible from falling into the same trap. Let them learn a life lesson the easy way. You can also receive further advice on your own circumstances. Also speak to CAB as they are usually good with these cases.

Please tell me I have recruited another member to the TV Licence Resistance?!

Sorry to jump this thread but I have a tv that just sits connected to a DVD player, it's not connected to anything else except the power supply- do I need to do anything to the TV to make it 'prove' I don't watch TV on it?? Otherwise I just have my laptop which I plan to block bbc I player on- is there anything else I need to do to legally remain TVL free
Just a single mum, working full time, bit of a nutcase, but mostly sensible, wanting to be Mortgage free by 2035 or less!

It would be unusual if you were ever asked to prove anything regarding your TV, however it is a good idea to detune it - run the autotune process without an aerial connected and save the results. On most TVs, this will delete any stored channels.

Because they rarely inspect equipment, you need to be aware of what they do do, which is to forcefully interview people, trying to get them to incriminate themselves, and in extreme cases doing it for them.

Do not speak to them, and if you do, just say "No comment". You could also say you want to speak with your Solicitor before you consent to be interviewed.

    Nope. Just the detune.

From what you have said, no, nothing. In the first instance if you do not let TVL goons in you do not need to "prove" anything.

I've had them visit me before and he asked to come in, I said yes and look round the back of my TV and said 'yup not connected to anything, that's fine' and left.
I got a letter a few days later to confirm that I did not need to pay for TVL and it said I may be visited again in 12 months. This time I shall just say sorry you can't come in. I think because I'm on myself own I felt I had to, I *think he said I can be prosecuted if I decline entry to them. Oh well.
