Some Advice Needed Re: Ebay Sale

I have sold an item on ebay which the buyer has received but says it has been damaged in the post and won't work. The item was fully working when posted. I have stated that I accept returns on all my listings but the buyer has to cover all return postage costs. I have offered the buyer their money back including their original postage costs but have not offered to cover the return postage. I am right in doing this? or should I offer to cover the return postage as well? I am not entirely sure that the item is damaged. The buyer says it just won't work but their is no evidence of any damage to the item. He is claiming that I did not package it well enough? I have a proof of posting but the item was not sent insured. Am I able to claim anything back via the post office?
Any thoughts as to what I should do would be appreciated....

What was the item?
You should refund the return postage if it was damaged (and you have checked the returned product), as its not the buyers fault. However, this sort of thing is a common scam to enable the buyer to swap a broken product for a good one.0 -
Thanks for the reply. I think I will wait and see when I get the product back.0

I never start an argument until I get the item back. You never know what tricks can be pulled.0
