New customer only deals

I am currently out of contract with O2 and want to upgrade to a new phone.

The upgrade price is about £150 more expensive than an offer for new customers for the same phone on mobiles.co.uk. O2 were not having it and said they don't price match such sites.

Is there any way to get this deal and keep the same number? I've read various articles and forum posts, most a couple of years old about temporarily swapping to another provider or going pay as you go for a bit, is this the case?

Yes thats the only way to do it.

You have to ring up O2 and ask for your Pac code Remember you have only 30 days to use it or your contract will keep running.

Give the Pac code to a different network provider on Payg
then after a couple of days ring and ask for you Pac code again after you get it give it to O2.

AFAIK, O2 is the only network where this can be done much simpler.
You call them and ask to cancel the old contract and to transfer the number to the new contract. No PAC is needed for this internal transfer.
  • Thanks, that sounds far too easy!

Has anyone got direct experience of doing such an easy transfer, cancelling one contract and moving the number to another?

Just try - you have nothing to lose. In the worst case scenario you still have the two-steps solution available.
