Salary balance payment and new tax year

Hi. My salary was underpaid last tax year and I didn’t receive the balance (as a lump sum) until just the other day. Being in a new tax year now, this lump sum has been taxed more severely than it would have been last year had I received it when intended.

I've paid 20% PAYE (would have been 0% last year) and 12% NI (would have been effectively around 4% last year).

Is there any way around this or do I just have to accept it? We’re only talking about £250 but that's a lot for me :D

Thanks,

Bump - any opinions on this? I contacted my HR department and they said they "don't answer queries about tax"... :/

Call the tax office. They have always been helpful to me when I've called. The number is 0300 200 3300. They say they open at 8am but if you call a bit before that they usually answer the phone. If you wait till later you will be in a looooong queue.
