Salary balance payment and new tax year

Hi. My salary was underpaid last tax year and I didn’t receive the balance (as a lump sum) until just the other day. Being in a new tax year now, this lump sum has been taxed more severely than it would have been last year had I received it when intended.
I've paid 20% PAYE (would have been 0% last year) and 12% NI (would have been effectively around 4% last year).
Is there any way around this or do I just have to accept it? We’re only talking about £250 but that's a lot for me
Thanks,

Bump - any opinions on this? I contacted my HR department and they said they "don't answer queries about tax"...0

Call the tax office. They have always been helpful to me when I've called. The number is 0300 200 3300. They say they open at 8am but if you call a bit before that they usually answer the phone. If you wait till later you will be in a looooong queue.0
