Any university lecturers on here?

Hi,

I am very interested in lecturing, or something similar, on the courses related to my profession in the NHS. I am not keen on moving into senior NHS management but, instead, would like to be involved with the younger generation interested in my profession.

I have a BSc, Masters and a post-grad diploma in my area but what would I need to gain employment in a university (even for a few hours - I work FT in the NHS at the moment)? Would I really need to do a PhD with almost 20 years service in the NHS?

Has anyone else done this?

You don't need a PhD to lecture, you don't even need a PhD to supervise PhD candidates!

Are you a clinician? I know physios that have got into lecturing through contacts made in their own postgrad studies, first offering one off guest lectures and then slotting in to the main timetable where opportunities arise. None have a teaching qualification.

Are you in touch with any old supervisors/ lecturers? Academia is still very much based around who you know. You may also want to look at getting your work published in relevant journals, and/ or helping with proofreading if the institution has its own journal.

I use to do the occasional run a lecture for MSc students when I worked for a university as a research assistant, and I only had my MSc. I was also an advisor to PhD students in their experimental design and analysis.

Best bet is to take a look at http://www.jobs.ac.uk/ to see what the requirements are, and obviously, what is available.

Have you got any contacts at a local university? I always thought it was rare to find someone who 'just lectured' - most academics do research as a main priority.

You don't need a Phd to lecture. I know many people who lecture with a Masters qualification. It is useful to have some formal teaching experience though. There are shortish courses out there for those who want to teach post 18 students. Although if your current role has elements of teaching or mentoring then that may be enough.
  • Many universities want you to complete a course leading to Fellowship of the HEA. https://www.heacademy.ac.uk/

This does not necessarily mean you need to get this qualification prior to starting a lecturing role. Many, possibly most, universities will support new lecturing staff in gaining this qualification.

I've covered a couple of degree-level sessions with an unrelated degree in another subject but also a whole bunch of experience in the sector I taught in.

True. Many Uni lecturers don't even have a Masters, especially in Law etc.

There's also FE lecturing as well as Higher. Although I think even for FE colleges you now need to gain a teaching qualification after a year or two in order to continue.
