Competitive Salary

How on earth am I supposed to know how much this is?

Similar jobs I'm looking at are advertised 24k-50k.

Are companies used to people asking them what ball park figure competitive means to them?

I'm a teacher so used to salary being set to the pound! Thanks.

  • "I'm only looking for positions paying over £x, is this role suitable?"

That's the question to be asking when these vague salaries are stated

I normally take this as a sign that the salary is poor enough that they don't wish to advertise it or alternatively they wish to base it on your current salary, a practice I don't agree with. Proceed with caution.

You have little to lose by ringing up for a chat. Sometimes it means they really don't know what level they will appoint at, sometimes it is a fishing trip, and sometimes it is inflicted 'policy'.

Another two reasons why it might be advertised as this: The company doesn't want existing employees to know what the role is advertised as - or they don't know yet what level they want. They might consider more junior candidates if they have potential for example (even though they might generally be looking for someone more senior).

Though, in some cases, it's simply a "let's try to get someone as cheaply as possible".

Nothing lost by asking - as was said above, just state that you're looking for x and if this fits into their range.

It mostly depends on luck and how well you do during the face to face interview. I have had instances where before the interview I was told that the absolute budget limit was £xx,000, only for them to offer £5k-10k more after the face to face!
