Self-employed subcontractor... any entitlements?

Hi,

I am an electrician. I have been subcontracting for a company for approx 2.5 years.
In this time, I have asked to be employed at least 3 times (never in wirting). To date, I am still self employed.
In the time I have been working for the company, several other electricians have been employed (and some of them have left again already!!)
I have now been told that due to unforeseen quiet patch, I may be laid of for a period time (along with other subbies).
I understand that that is a business decision which makes sense to me, but the reason I would be laid is to keep employed guys busy. Again, this makes sense, but very frustrating. I have been loyal, hardworking, not paid as much as some others (but no complaints with that) and I am more skilled/qualified than some that are employed.

What I would like to know is if the way I've been treated illegal in anyway (the non-employed, not the layoff)?
Is there anything I can do or am I clutching at straws through frustration?

Thanks for reading and any advice you may have
