Damaged Suitcase

Hi,
I flew wuth Ukraine Inernational Airways (UIA) IN January. When I took my case off the conveyor belt I noticed my case was a bit dirty but I ignored it. Only upon leaving the airport did I realise the case was broken which had caused something inside to split, hence the dirty case.
The next day I emailed UIA explaining what had happened and requesting compensation for dry cleaning and a new suitcase. After about 6 weeks they replied saying they cant process my request because I dont have my DPR. How can I proceed, or is this a lost cause?

Probably a lost cause. You usually need to report the damage at the airport (where they'll make a DPR) to get anywhere.0
