I have £290,000 from a house sale. I do not want to touch this money for six months then I would need it all for a house purchase. Where is the best place to put it? It can be divided between my wife and my self.

Assuming you do not want to risk it on the stockmarket try looking up the best interest rates on the MSE site.

Divide the money between financial institutions up to £75K per institution per person.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.
