Options after sick pay

I have a long term illness and medical reports all confirm I am no longer to do my current job. My employer did consider redeployment but they are making significant redundancies in most departments. Also my GP is unwilling at present to sign me fit even for a lesser part time role as the consultant thinks it will result in relapse.

Since last summer I have been in long protracted discussions with my employer. My sick pay runs out next month (including statutory sick pay). I want to apply for ill health retirement, but they have not yet been given the go-ahead by my employer for Occupational health to process the application. The union had a meeting with my employer and was told they wish to dismiss me due to my medical condition. I understand this is reasonable. Given that the process seems to be dragging out so long, what are my options in the period between getting notice pay and the end of sick pay. Can I apply for ESA?

When you are coming to the end of your SSP you should get an SSP1 form from your employer to claim ESA.

I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Thank you. I will phone them and ask :)
  • Your employer should send you form ssp1

within 7 days of the employee going off sick, if they don’t qualify for SSP
within 7 days of their SSP ending, if it ends unexpectedly while they’re still sick
on or before the beginning of the 23rd week, if their SSP is expected to end before their sickness does

You will need this for your esa claim.
