Income Support - how do non-dependents affect this?

Hi,


I currently claim IS due to being a carer to my husband who is currently claiming PIP


I wondered if anyone knows how it would affect my IS if my mother (a non dependent) moved in.
she is working and 60 years old.


I don't receive housing benefit and I know that Council tax benefit wont be affected because of my DH's entitlement to PIP, but I couldn't find after hours of searching whether my IS will be affected?

it wont be affected.
even when living with you, your mother would be classes as a separate household for benefit purposes. as you said, council tax support wont be affected because of the PIP award

weekly reduction
gross income: less than £129 14.65-


gross income: £129 to £188.99 33.65-

gross income: £246 to £327.99 75.60-


gross income: £328 to £407.99 86.10-


gross income: £408 and above 94.50



does this not affect me at all? if not, how come?

edit: sorry the table didn't copy across very well. but the figure after the gross income amount is the deduction they take off your weekly income support

they are the figures for non dependant deductions from housing benefit.
no idea why it mentions ESA, JSA and IS though, as non dependant deductions don't apply as a non dependant would be responsible to support you financially. severe disability premium would be affected but you only receive that if you live alone ( or as part of a couple where both receive relevant disability benefit) and no one claims carers allowance

Nanny to one, my son is the cause of none dependant deductions from my H.B. and he isn't financially responsible for me. Please can you clarify. I too am in receipt of I.S. as a carer.

Just to clarify there are no deductions from your I.S claim because of your non dependent son?

Non dependant deductions are supposed to represent the share of the rent that person should pay. The non dependant isn't going to pay to support you but has to pay their fair share of the rent to be housed.

You get an extra room allowance for the non dependant so you get more housing benefit you might get the 2 bedroom LHA rate instead of the 1 bedroom LHA rate and then that is reduced by whatever they earn so if they earn let's say minimum wage you get around £46/week less housing benefit. You would ask the non dependant to pay that amount to you for their rent.

You would also have a deduction from your council tax too and you would ask them to pay their share of that bill.

income related benefits that are paid for your living costs ( JSA, ESA, IS, Pension Credit) are not affected by a non dependant adult that lives in the same property as you.
housing benefit and council tax support are affected though.
if the tenant or their partner, receives DLA/PIP care component of any rate then no non dependant deduction is made from either housing benefit or council tax support

My son and I are joint tenants and he gets High rate care DLA and low rate mobility DLA, the non-dependant deductions are still taken
