  • don't they do most things remotely anyway? When I called up my seller solicitor (I know) thinking it'd speed up the process, they said it would not.

Look on the Law Society's Find a Solicitor page and make a list of solicitors in the area. I'd go for one which is a member of the Conveyancing Quality Scheme personally but its an optional scheme.

Once you have a list get on the phone or email, or go and see them (however you would normally prefer contact them) and ask them for a quote. Then narrow your decision down by what is most important to you. Discount the really expensive ones, the ones who took ages to get back to you, the ones where you were fobbed off with an assistant, the ones who were rude or didn't seem competent, the ones who aren't on the panel of your lender.

You don't need to choose someone local, but again I always would personally. Not only do they have the advantage of knowing the local area and probably the other professionals involved (solicitors, estate agents), they are also nearby so you can go in to sign documents, sort out any last minute issues etc.
