Buying a leasehold flat with a pet

I don't think there is a tendency for an automatic ban on pets in flats, very much up to the terms of the lease. Mine allows a small dog cat or bird.
Like Guest101, I think you should be worried about the 'may'. I read that as meaning that no one needs to prove the pet actually is a nuisance and that it effectively does amount to a blanket ban.0 -
All leasehold flats I've had had similar clauses, and generally they're there to ensure other leaseholders aren't disturbed by the way you live. Like the clauses on no music or TV after 2300 (which many people ignore and keep volumes to a sensible level), or no laminate or wooden flooring (which many people ignore and remember not to wear heels on the floor). I had two cats in both places I lived in - I knew they wouldn't cause a problem therefore no-one needed to know I had them. Certainly no-one needed to make a complaint. I had horrid laminate flooring in one place, and people played music all the time.
Worst case scenario, someone complains, it goes to tribunal, you sell the place and move on. It certainly sounds like a no dog clause, but how many people actually even know that's in the lease?
I certainly wouldn't ask / tell the freehold managing company / freeholder as I'd think they'd be on the cautious side and say no outright to save any problems later down the line.
