An interesting article. Apparently all women between the age of 15 and 45 are currently pregnant in South America. That's going to be quite a population boom this year!

A question: surely all travel insurance would pay out if, at the time of departure, medical advice was not to travel (unless this was a risk known at the time of booking and/or taking out the insurance)?

So: at the moment the risk in Portugal is minimal and there is no reason not to travel. However, if at the time of departure the OP's doctor advised her not to go, just about any travel insurance policy ought to meet the claim. No need for separate cover for Zika...
  • You're asking an insurance company to cover you for a known problem which may be rather difficult.

Even if you were advised by your GP not fly I'm not sure insurers would pay that claim because Zika, the strong possibility of it spreading, and your pregnancy would all be known about when you took the policy out.

Insurance really should be taken out as soon as you part with any money.

There's a pregnant woman in Spain got it, along with 6 other people.
