in Water bills
Hi everyone,
I'm thinking of getting a meter put in as I live alone, don't have a dishwasher, work full time, don't water the garden etc - think I'll be much better off on a meter.
However - - - something on the waterboard site has raised a query. It says that properties built before 1966 commonly had the metal water pipe earthing the electrical supply to the house.
My house was built in the 1930s. So according to the water board I'd need to have my electrical system tested and 'if your electrical system is found to be in breach of current regulations, the full cost of rectification will fall on you.'
Has anyone been through this? I don't want to be lumbered with an electrician bill of hundreds!!!!
Thanks

How upto date are your electrics?
If they had not been updated since the thirties, you would have cloth covered cables! If you have a modern system, chances are your bonding has been updated.
The water people won't actually inspect your electrics, they are just telling you to cover themselves.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Unfortunately its up to the consumers not the water board to fix this problem.0

Hi thanks for your replies.
I bought the house 4 years ago and I have no idea when the wiring was updated, although I'm pretty sure something had been done as the previous owner had all kinds of disabled help things taken out before I moved in (shower upstairs in bedroom and a lift from the lounge to the bedroom)
I realise it would be up to me to fix it, just would rather bury my head in the sand in case I do need it!0
