Car Insurance Hike of 30% for change of address???

Just wondering if this was normal? Is there anything I can do about it?
I am currently with Tesco paying £260 per year and renewal came through as £292.
I have recently changed address and when I update this my policy increases to £410!!!
I've done a comparison and this is the cheapest.
I've moved from a housing estate with residential car parking to a much better area 15 minutes away with my own drive way. Seems unfair to me?!

  • I'm afraid that this is a massive rating factor for insurance companies. It all boils down to what postcodes make the most claims whether that be for theft or accident. If you've done your research and this is the best price then I'm afraid there's not much more you can do other than let Tesco know you're not happy with the price and considering leaving them. Maybe they'll have some kind of retention team?

Is that including the admin fee for changing details?

Shop around, after I moved and my renewal increased by a ridiculous amount (much more than yours) I found cover at half the price elsewhere with a major insurer.
  • thank you - it didn't include an admin fee as I'm not processing the change of address until my renewal date.
I think I will give them a call and see what they can do for me....
15 years no claims and a clean licence must count for something....... well you would hope.

It certainly can't hurt to ring them, but loyalty generally counts for less than nothing in the insurance world these days, and you are often better off going to another provider as a new customer.

Moving to a property in a better area with a drive may see the premium rise due to experience/stats of millenium burglary in the area.

That's house broken into to steal car keys, as car is on drive and visible to thief who knows which house to burgle which is less likely with only on-street parking.
