You don't mention a budget.
I like VW but agree with the other poster that reliability is only average on them, especially the 2009-2012 ones.
The Ford Focus is a good solid car that will give you few problems if you buy a good one and look after it.
I think I would avoid the new smaller engined Eco petrol ones though.0 -
The buying a Diesel to save money rarely works out, Diesels built 2005 onwards can be more bother than they are worth.
Long gone are the "run for ever" days of the old naturally aspirated v6 chuggers.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -

Did work for me with unloved Kia Rio diesel 2009, bought 1,5 years ago than 5 y/o, no problems yet, no DFS, no flywheel, timing chain instead of belt, road tax £30, strong powerful motor.
Expecting to run it to the ground and trade in for another bargain.
Did same with my old Toyota Corolla, the car have been faultless for all 6 years I owned it.
Miracles happens.:)0 -
Timing chains usually need regular oil changes to last as long as they are meant to.
I had a mk4 golf tdi around 2003-2007 and the only problem I had was an air flow mass meter, I just changed the oil/filter every year and changed the air filter once, it was always around 50mpg.
My current mk7 is just a time bomb of things that can fail, dpf, egr, electronic hand brake, day to day driving it's closer to 40mpg this time of year.0 -

6 seats? Desperate? 8,000 miles per year?
Fiat Multipla. Decent cars from the inside.0 -
If you want a real 6 seater look at the Honda FR-V. Very reliable and about £2k for a good one. Son paid £1k for a decent one privately.0

My Vectra is 2004, owned since 2008 and by far the cheapest car i've ever run.
The problem is that nobody looks after their cars these days.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
