Trees/plants to provide screening
My husband and I are looking at buying a new build property. The majority of the garden of the plot we are interested in is private except for where the french doors which lead out of the kitchen diner are located - the house behind has a clear view of them. We are just after some advice as to what the best types of trees/plants would be to provide more privacy. We don't know much about the different tree and plant species so don't know where to start!
Although we would like some immediate partial privacy we aren't necessarily after anything fast growing that will take a lot of looking after. Something that has some interest would be nice, i.e. blossom but as we have a young child we don't want anything that could produce poisonous berries/seeds.
We also don't want anything that will grow too tall as we don't want to end up blocking light out of the neighbouring gardens.
Any help will be appreciated!

Bamboo, if you select and plant carefully so it doesn't spread everywhere. I have mine in root containers.0

How about some Camellias? They are evergreen and pretty slow growing - my MIL has one which has wonderful pink blooms all winter.0

A trellis with climbers?0

We need much more input from the OP to be of much use. There's the whole of the Plant Finder out there and no indication of scale here, including time scales.
It seems to me that close screening is necessary first, maybe 3-4 metres from the doorway. This could later be replaced by screening at the end of the garden, when 'something' matures.
At least the OP seems to appreciate that you can't have fast-growing and low maintenance in the same package!0 -
How about a pergola outside the French doors instead? Could plant some lovely climbers up the sides like a passion flower, honeysuckle, etc. Something like this...
