And work don't pay sick pay. I have had a suspected heart attack and am going to be in a while for various tests etc and will probably be off for a while once out of hospital. What do I do about money? I'm a single parent with 6 children (albeit one at uni). I'm panicking about bills. I've been working since January this year. Can I claim sick pay at all as work don't have any scheme in place ? What happens to my pension payments ? My youngest is 5.5 and I'm 44 if that makes any difference. Any advice please ? This is my third day in hospital.

Your employer may not pay contractual sick pay but they have to pay statutory sick pay if you meet the conditions.

Have you contacted your employer and followed their procedure about sickness? You need to do this.
As far as I am aware you and your employer can still make the pension contributions whilst on SSP. You need to speak to your HR department.
You can put in a claim for Income support whilst you are receiving SSP. You can also claim HB and CT support - contact Income Support and your council.
If you have any holiday pay owing to you you can also take this whilst in hospital and recovering if you and your employer agree to this.
First port of call is your employer.0 -
Thank you. I contacted them the day I went into hospital and also yesterday. I will contact them again tomorrow Once I hopefully have some answers. I do appear to qualify for SSP so that's good and I wasn't aware I could apply for IS too.Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

You can apply for Income Support but you may not be awarded it if your SSP is higher than your applicable amount.
The applicable amount depends on whether you are receiving working tax credits (which is counted as income) and any disability premiums (if you are receiving the correct level of DLA/PIP).0 -
Oh I see. I do get working tax but not dla or pip as I had no idea there was anything wrong with my heart until Tuesday.Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

If you are single, with no DLA or PIP, you won't get anything from Income Support I'm afraid. As previously mentioned SSP is more than IS for a single person.0
