Suitcase or Rucksack?

What would you take as your carry on luggage?

Tried rucksacks but there are usually too many dangly bits to catch on things and/or hit other passengers in the face with.

Doesn't really matter what I take (backpack) what do you want to take?
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

It rather depends on being a male or female as females will bring all bar the kitchen sink on a one night trip where as most men tend to travel quite light.

For many years I've used a soft bag with a shoulder strap and also backpack style straps for when it's heavier, versatile according to load and compact when it's light. With a suitcase you have the same bulk to contend with even when it's not full.

If I'm just taking carry on luggage then generally if it's for work I take a small case, if it's a holiday I take a backpack. Backpacks are more convenient to lug around but cases look after my shirts better, less wrinkles.

I'm a woman and always travel light ;) usually with a small suitcase. Depends how much travelling you are doing when you get off the plane though, a rucksack might be easier if you are moving about a lot and getting on various public transport, but if you are just going straight from airport to hotel a suitcase is fine.

Oh I have (but I usually do 12-15kg) 30kg checked luggage. I usually take a rucksack for my blanket mainly, but then there's the travel documents, & bits & pieces such as lip gloss, moisturiser, tissues, wipes, earplanes, & plugs, flip flops, & socks as my feet are always cold. The rucksack comes in handy with it's many pockets, & I can put my feet up on it, or put it on my lap & rest my head on it to sleep at the airport. However, it pulls on my neck. The suitcase has nothing going for it really, apart from me being able to wheel it. Also I was thinking it would be difficult to get my stuff in & out.

Stevie, my rucksack's only about 2kg, but the case is 5kg empty. Mr Duke's camera rucksack's 12kg, & he takes all sorts of rubbish with him like 38 shirts .... :eek
  • I would take a rucksack - easier to carry and easier to squash into the overhead bins or under the seat.

I always take a rucksack. Easier, leaves hands free and more useful.
(Another light travelling female here :D )

If the one you have pulls on your neck, DUKE, you might need to adjust the straps. Personally, I prefer one with a waist strap as well, takes the weight off the shoulders :)

Always a backpack but I have been seriously considering changing this.

The negatives I have experienced are having things broken in it by other people shoving their cases on top of/next to/in front of it and being forced to put it at my feet under the chair in front of me and losing my legroom to make sure suitcases can be fitted in to the overhead lockers. Losing my feet space because I take a small amount of hand luggage instead of a massive case bugs me!
