The web address of the Gardening board has now been changed from https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/greenfingered-moneysaving to https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/gardening so that it is in line with the board's current name. Don't worry though, the old address will still redirect you here, but it's worth updating it in your saved links or browser favourites.
We'd like to remind Forumites to please avoid political debate on the Forum. This is to keep it a safe and useful space for MoneySaving discussions. Threads that are - or become - political in nature may be removed in line with the Forum’s rules. Thank you for your understanding.

  • I originally got some from work to discourage ants (don't think this actually works)|, but what it does do quite nicely is help to break up our heavy clay soil.

    Compost bin

Around cabbages etc to deter slugs (not actually sure if that works or not!)

    Runner bean trench

Mix with the soil when you dig it over

Thankyou both - it felt a bit wasteful to merely consign them to compost, when I'm certain something to do with bromeliads sprang to ancient mind........?

  • Yeah, compost bin too, I'm afraid. I have heard they're useful as a slug deterrent, but I'm not convinced, and they're a faff to do anything with.

    Citrus trees in pots! :D:D

Not only makes the soil more acid, but a good source of phosphorus, copper, magnesium, and potassium. They are reputedly good for keeping false codling moth at bay, which mine do suffer from.... so either I need to drink more coffee, or it doesn't work.
