Chilaw Sri Lanka

At the end of my trip to Sri Lanka we spend a night in Chilaw then go to the airport.
I am travelling alone, my flight is not until 5pm. Rather than sitting in the hotel twiddling my thumbs until it is time to leave for the airport I am thinking of hiring a taxi which will not only take me to the airport but via any interesting sites – taking, say, 3 hours for the 25 miles or so.
This idea is only sensible if there is anything worth seeing.
Does anyone know this area? Is there anything worth seeing rather than just driving straight to the airport.
Any thoughts will be, as always, much appreciated.
