How long do RM keep an item of standard mail before returning to sender?

As title!
Amazon customer says her book hasn't arrived - but despite my pleas she has not yet checked with the RM.
If it had been returned I wouldn't know about it, as I've recently moved (but still have access to old address)

3 weeks for all items except recorded which is 1 week
however its not exact.basically every few days you go through the packets and remove any out of date packets.
mark them for return and send them on.
again in return transit they are technically 2nd class in the sorting.0 -
Thank you, it was sent 1st class on 10th August so it might still be sitting around at the sorting office.
It's a large book (cost me £5 to post) and I've been suggesting the postie didn't bother to leave a card (I know it happens)
Do you have any excellent words of advice for my stubborn buyer to persuade her to go and check? Or is it possible to contact the sorting office for London, E3 by phone? My TV is broken!

192.com or the like will produce the local DO office number.
as for cards not being left.the biggest problem in my office is access to stairs in flats. say a driver goes out and gets no answer.
he cannot leave a card without access to the stair.so goes back to the office and leaves a card for the postman to deliver the next day.
various issues can come up here including the driver noting the wrong details, forgetting to do the card!!,the packet having the wrong address so the card goes to the wrong flat etc
generally for your postman theres no benifit to not leaving a card as he/she wants rid of the packet ASAP0 -

how did you send it?0 -
Oops, it appears I may be at fault. From my receipt, it looks as though I sent the book to no. 33, instead of no. 31.
If no. 33 had returned it to sender, would the delivery office have logged it?
(Trying to decide whether it's worth paying a train fare to check for an item of mail that may not be at my other address)My TV is broken!

just normal first class, unfortuantley the postage credit from amazon didnt even cover the cost of postage as it was a 7disc box set so sending recorded etc was gonna eat into my cash
i have proof of postage and it does state the 14th
ironic thing about it is the buyer stays about 15 miles from me0 -

there is no logging on standard returned items.would just be way too intensive for a service which actually loses money.
recorded and special delivery items should be scanned as returned to sender0 -

So should I assume that the item is a) at no. 33, b) at my place having been RTS, or c) lost?
Buyer can check a, I can check b, and fingers crossed it's not c!My TV is broken!
