Overdraft/ Bank Charges claiming

Hi-
hope someone can give me some advice-
I had a £1500 (agreed) overdraft on a joint account- but stopped using the account. After a while Abbey closed the account and instructed a debt chasing company to get the money back from us. We settled with them on an amount around £1000.
Now that we are have successfully claimed bank charges back- Abbey have deducted the extra £500 saying that it is our debt with them.
Can they do this considering it was settled over a year ago and Abbey have never chased us for any money?
I am going to complaint to them and to ombudsman, but unsure if I will get this £500 or not.
Thanks for any help.
