Parents in business, kids in economy

  • I think it's a great question.

Find cheap business class fares in a sale, perhaps flying out of Dublin or Copenhagen.

    And treat the whole family.

Statistically the chances of your child encountering misfortune are literally millions of times higher travelling to and from school. Does this mean all parents should escort their children to school until they are old enough for university or perhaps homeschool so the children never leave the family home unaccompanied ?

Life is full of risks . Each parent gets to decide when to loosen the ties.
A parent who insists a child must sit by them on a plane is often the same parent who allows a child to wander a holiday complex unaccompanied or allow them out of their sight for hours daily at an overseas children's holiday club. Again statistically the child mortality risks as well as the possibility of injury are many many times higher with the latter.

Moving this on a bit but in the same vein as the OP.

You are travelling with your spouse (no kids) and you are offered an upgrade at the gate . Do you
A Take the upgrade and leave your spouse in economy after all you earned it with all your frequent flying

B Give it to your spouse as they deserve it for keeping everything running at home whilst you are travelling for work and they deserve a treat.

C Refuse it and both remain uncomfortable in Y

This question comes up fairly often on flyer talk.

    B obviously ;)

C may not be an option if your seat has already been given away.

I'd agree b too but what if something happened you'd be separated from your loved one. Should you insist your loved one stays uncomfortable just in case the plane crashes and you prefer to die with them next to you?

It wouldn't even be something we would debate, either we both get an upgrade or neither moves.

    Yep, us too.

If it was that uncomfortable back in Y that I'd ditch my OH for a free upgrade I wouldn't have booked those seats in the first place.

I have to wonder why some people have children in the first place.

If only I could have met my kids before they were born :D
Turning left avoids some of the idiots (only some)
  • I wouldn't do it, mostly for the implied tones of "we don't want to sit with you". Doesn't send a particularly nice message to children. If I'm going on holiday with my family I would like to talk to and be with them.

In the unlikely event of anything ghastly happening, I'd like to think that I could at least tell them that I love them one last time, even if there was no possibility that I could save them or survive.
