Owner of Vehicle as named but not primary driver

Hi Folks,

I've got an obscure insurance requirement that I'm having a little trouble finding cove for.

My housemate and I both want to be insured drivers on his car.

I'll be driving it the most, I've also been driving for 3 years with no claims whereas he's just passed. So we're trying to find a policy where I can be the Primary driver.

Most insurers want the primary driver, policy holder and owner of the vehicle to be the same person but naturally because of his experience this makes the premium very high.

does anyone know of an insurer who might be able to provide a policy?

I'm the nominated main driver on my wife's car... she's the named owner/keeper. No problem when we changed to this arrangement some time ago, nor is there any lack of quotes returned via the comparison sites when we compare the offerings each year.

The issue may be that you two are not related by blood or otherwise?

If you can't get anything via putting your details and requirement into the comparison sites then a Broker is the place to go.

    Most will.

If you do online quotes you normally select which driver is to be the "main" driver.

If you find a policy you like and there isn't an option to have the named driver as the main driver then contact them direct and see if they can sort it manually.

Your right, in most cases the issue appears to be that he is not my relative, spouse or civil partner.

So save from getting married my best option looks like digging a little deeper with the specific car insurers who gave good initial quotes with him as the primary.

    Any recommendations for specific brokers?

Just had to re-read your post because it didnt stand out the first time..

He has just passed and you have been driving for a while and because his premiums are high you are trying to find a policy where you can be the primary driver?

    Sounds fishy.

    Why?

"I'll be driving it the most,". Doesn't that mean primary driver?

Yeah I don't see how its fishy.

It would just be a shame for the assessment of the insurance premium to be unduly weighted towards him and his experience, just because he is the owner and most comparison sites don't allow you to distinguish between 'owner of vehicle' and 'Primary Driver/Policy Holder'

making my name the one on the V5 is the potentially work around but I don't really want to go there yet.

Also, worth noting that the owner of the vehicle in this instance might not earn an NCB in their own name with some providers so consider this.
