SSP and fit note date

Hi all
Apologies if this is not the correct forum. I did look for the closest and as this is benefits related assume this one appropriate.
In short, I had a motorbike accident and went to doc for fitness for work. He gave me a fit note with a end date of 13th Sept ( option checked that I am not fit for work).
I advised my employer that I may return back earlier, as my doc advised I could do this if i felt up to it rather than staying off the full length of the note (though my doc did say it may take longer for me to heal)
My employer is insisting that if I do return to work before the date on the current fit note I need another fit note with the amended return to work date?
I have looked into this (nhs site among others) and some say this is correct others not.
Can anyone clarify this please?
Regards
Paul

I think your employer is entitled to ask for evidence that you are fit for work but how you'll be able to prove it when your own Doctor thinks you haven't 'fully healed' could be problematic....0

If your employer wants confirmation from your GP that you are fit to return to work, isn't the simplest thing just to see your GP and obtain a fit note confirming you are fit to return? Some employers do want one whilst others are simply glad to get people back to work.0

I think it depends on what you're doing and your employer is allowed to ask for proof you are fit to work. If you have an accident and injure yourself or someone else their insurance might not cover them if it turns out you were signed off at the time. Just see your GP again and discuss your return with them.0
