I'm going to Paris for 4 days the week after next. If you've ever been give me one thing I must do and one thing I shouldn't bother doing.

Thanks :)

Personally... I loved everything in Paris. My favourite trip so far.

Struggling to think of just one thing.
    * Would highly recommend the Basillica de Sacre Couer. If you do go, they have a wee road train that goes up there which is really cute.

    * If you are going for a special occassion, there is a restaurant in the Eiffel Tower (58 tour eifel) which does a 3 course meal for about 40 euros a person.
It is a very limited menu but when we went, we got positioned at the best table in the place with a beautiful view of the trocadero. It was amazing and very reasonable in relation to the Jules Verne restaurant above it.

    * Other thing which you might no know (we didn't and just stumbled upon it by chance), is that every night at 18:30 they do a ceremony thing for the unknown soldier at the Arc De Triomphe. It is actually quite lovely and then you can climb up the Arc De Triomphe at night for a view of the Eiffel Tower sparkling every hour.

Sorry... so many amazing memories of our trip to Paris. Couldn't pick just one thing.
Hope you have a great holiday.

Thank you Stewby, will certainly do the Basillica and will watch out for ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe.

    Any other recommendations?

Look up the website "Paris picnic"

It was the most romantic picnic I ever had. They provide you with a picnic including blanket etc which you get to keep and they deliver anywhere in Paris. We choose to pick up at the effile tower and had our picnic in the park there.

Also if your there on a Thursday or Sunday I would recommend bastille market which has lots of nice food and bits and bobs.

Walking is what I would recommend. Paris is probably the best city I've been to for walking.

Do you have an idea of budget? Is this a bit of a blow out or something more simple?

    This place is unbelievably good:

    L'Equisse, 151 Bis Rue Marcadet, 75018 Paris.

Bis means two or second so the actual street name is Rue Marcadet. It's not much to look at but the food is amazing.

It's winning loads of awards for up-and-coming restaurant. I know the owner a bit.

It's really imaginative as French restaurants go and if you just let the man there sort out the drinks for you then you'll have the best night. If there's a young woman in there with a spaniel say "Hi" from Richard in Sydney.

I loved a cruise on the Seine, you can see so many famous landmarks. Paris by night is magical, so would recommend a tour to see all the sights, You can of course combine the two, a cruise on the Seine at night.

The thing I most enjoyed was a cruise along the Seine, but found Paris in general to be massively over-hyped. I've been several times, for different reasons, and never found anything to alter my first impression.
I know a lot of people love it, but I've never understood the attraction.

A lot depends on where you are based and personal interests, walking around Marais/Bastille is good.Should visit most major sites and food markets. Unfortunately a lot of Parisians are on holiday in August apparently even the rota for artisan bakers dropped this year whereas they used to have to take turns so people could buy fresh bread.

We bought a book of tickets for the Metro, cheaper and saved a lot of aggro compared to individual journeys. Sightseeing bus was pretty good also.
