Guarantees on second-hand goods

If you buy used goods eg mobile phone on ebay and the guarantee is still in force is the guarantee still valid once the item is yours and if so do you need the receipt?

most retailers/repair centre's would require the receipt

some nokia service centre's will just scan the IMEI of the handset and check if it was still under warrantee, but best to have the receipt
