Can I collect an unused ticket from ticket machine a day after ticket date

I stupidly booked the wrong day for an off peak day return today. Meant to book Aug 22 but paid for Aug 21. Takethetrain.co.uk says I can only get a refund if I send them the tickets.

I won't be able to go to the station til tomorrow as I don't live close. Will I still be able to collect the tickets from the machine a day after they've expired?

Thanks!

    You should be able to.

But will they accept them back if posted after their expiry date??

Their customer service person claim that (via email) I should be able to get refund if the tickets are sent within 28 days of travel date.

Not sure if she is right? That would mean that anyont who bought a ticket and took a train without showing their ticket can get a refund...though it costs £10 per ticket admin fee to get a refund.

As you have it in writing it looks like you are in the pound seats for a refund!! (Well...£10 ones any way)

    seems correct
Time limit for refunds on all tickets
Please note that the National Rail Conditions of Carriage (conditions enforced by the train companies and which apply to every ticket sold) state that to be eligible for a refund all tickets must be returned to takethetrain.co.uk within 28-days of the expiry of the validity of the ticket. If you bought two single tickets for a return journey, this means each ticket will have a different time limit for refund. Upon receipt of any ticket(s) takethetrain.co.uk will assess the tickets eligibility for refund in accordance with all applicable conditions before making a refund. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure that tickets are returned within these time limits and we therefore recommend that you use a secure and fast method of delivery such as Royal Mail Special Delivery when returning tickets to us.

    You certainly can.

Here is a thread where the poster is complaining because the machine did issue a ticket after the date of travel: .

Wow very interesting thread! Wonder what would happen if I printed out the tickets tomorrow and used the tickets for the journey....

I'm going from London Liverpool Street to Harwich International though, I'm expecting proper ticket barriers and quite a few inspectors :)

If the ticket is a date-specific one, it will not be valid for 22/8.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

It's not relevant - the OP doesn't want to use it for a journey!

(He needs it to get his refund)
  • I retrieved a ticket for a missed train almost a week later once (out of curiosity).
