The web address of the Gardening board has now been changed from https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/greenfingered-moneysaving to https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/gardening so that it is in line with the board's current name. Don't worry though, the old address will still redirect you here, but it's worth updating it in your saved links or browser favourites.

Now at 1st I thought these were sloe plums/berries or whatever we call them. But the branches are not thorny and as you can see these thing are actually more of a tree than a bush. Can anyone help id these please ?

  • They are blackthorn (sloes). Pick late Sept/Oct, add to gin and store in dark place until you can resist no more!

Bullaces have less spines than sloes but similar fruit. I think you might have to be brave and taste one to be sure!

They are not sloes. I have plenty of those. I have damsons too.

They just look like plums to me. :)

I am told by the locals that these fruit grow no larger than a grape. As i said my 1st thought were sloes but there are absolutely no thorns in site and these "trees" are easily 12 foot + high...Still a little in the dark.

I think they are probably damsons.
