Scammer on gumtree! Help, I'm bricking it.

So I got a scammer, but of course nothing was suspicious until tonight. I sold some items worth £10, he wanted to pay by cheque. I thought it was odd, but when I was in retail people payed by cheque for things for £20 all the time. Plus, my husband's gran always gives us a cheque for £10 for birthdays and such. I've exchanged mobile and addresses with people on eBay, Gumtree and Freecycle when collecting and picking up. But tonight I got this email:

Thanks you for the information given.... I will like you to get back to me with the full details

Your Name?

Your Address?

Your Zipcode?

Your City?

Your State?

I believe i need to confirm your details if is correct before i can forward it to my secretary who is going to issue the cheque and i will want you to understand that, i will arange for the pickup by my self by contacting the shipper that will depart for the pickup in your location and the shipping firm will be added with your asking price for the shipment.... I hope you can understand me better now.... Your swift response will be highly appreciated

Regards
Richard

This just screams scam to me. So now of course I'm worried that he can use the information I gave him (in good faith) to do who knows what. Should I be worried? I'm pretty good with spotting scammers, and I'm quite mad I fell for it up until now. Should I change my mobile number? He hasn't called, I guess he won't. Can he do anything with my name and address? I suppose I shouldn't worry, he seems like the type who wants a quick scam. But of course, I worry about everything. I did report him to Gumtree staff tonight.

It sounds like he's going to make the cheque out for more - 'the shipping firm will be added with your asking price for the shipment'

I would reply stating sorry not interested and ignore all further contact.

It sounds like a twist on quite an old trick - send you far more money than the item is worth, but wil ask for some kickback as the cheque has been drawn on "company funds".

I think the cheque clears initially, but is recalled shortly after.

Great minds!! I expect the courier won't turn up but as you've deposited the cheque could you wire the funds to him, something along those lines.
  • Have Gumtree got back to you?

I'd ignore the person, don't contact him again and wait to hear back from Gumtree..

I got exactly the same email form a bloke I was trying to buy some Reading tickets from 2 days ago. + he wanted me to pay by themoneyshop.com. I thought it was a bit whiffy, so I left them :(

Generally the scammers are thousands of miles away and just trying it on.

Don't worry about any of it.

If a cheque does appear, and if it's drawn on a UK bank you could always forward it on to their fraud dept along with your Nigerian's(?) details.
    The money, Dave...

Gumtree haven't gotten back yet. I hope they do, but I'm going to ignore this guy from here on out.
