The web address of the Gardening board has now been changed from https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/greenfingered-moneysaving to https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/categories/gardening so that it is in line with the board's current name. Don't worry though, the old address will still redirect you here, but it's worth updating it in your saved links or browser favourites.

Slugs
So many slugs!!!!
My back garden is paved, i have tubs and trying to grow a few things and make the best out of the space I have.
But there are sssoooooo many slugs, and they are eating the few things I am already growing.
I don't want to actually kill them - not their fault I can't stand them. I have guinea pigs, with a large run out the back too, so don't want to use an all over deterrent like salt, which will have a negative impact on them.
Ideas please.

Sorry what you need is a sharp edged trowel and a backbone.
You could also try nematodes but I'm not sure how they will take to pots.
Salt is not an all over deterrent it should be applied directly to the slug.
Since this is MSE there is a fortune awaiting the person who can solve the slug problem. The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
I've had huge amounts of the ikky things for years. I somehow got incredibly lucky this year and had a hedgehog move in and he's taken care of both the slug and snail problem. Barely seen a single one, just lots of empty shells.
The only things i can suggest, from years of experimenting and googling for ideas are beer traps (a deep-ish bowl or container with beer in it..the slugs like the smell, come to investigate, fall in and drown. So at least they go happy). Or orange and grapefruit peel, which according to some sites they hate and stay well away from. This didn't always seem to work as other insects seemed to like it instead, so one problem replaced another. But the beer traps do work and you'll be amazed how many you wake up to find in there. It can be tucked away under a plant and out of sight too, so doesn't look bad.
Good luck..Book a week challenge: 11/52. Competitions won in 2021: 120
