If you have cancer it's unlikely you will get life insurance until it has been clear for a couple of years (maybe more).

Though any policies in force prior to you knowing about your current symptoms won't be affected.

    No.

Unfortunately, once you suffer symptoms it is too late to get cover for that. When you move onto investigations the insurer will defer offering cover until the outcome of the investigations are known.

You can get life cover, but you very likely cannot get it for the cancer you've been referred to the hospital for. This would be specifically excluded on the policy.

You'd also likely find that anything that could be related to this would be excluded.

And thats why you have to be careful on forums such as these because with respect the above poster is talking absolute nonsense.

No insurer will offer terms while you are undergoing investigation.

If you get the all clear then it should not be a problem but if diagnosis is confirmed then no insurer is likely to cover you.

I'm sorry but it just highlights the fact that this cover needs to be taken when you are healthy for just this reason.

    Incorrect for two reasons.

    1. What stephenni1971 said.

    2. Life insurance is different to health insurance. They don't exclude any causes of death. They simply choose to cover you or not. In your case, they'd simply decline your application - they wouldn't give you a policy that covered death excluding death from cancer. (n.b. some life insurances exclude suicide, or exclude suicide in the first X years - this is different as its standard policy wording, not an exclusion applied to the policy schedule of individual customers).

My hubby has a complex medical history so we used a specialist broker to find him life insurance. After starting the application he was referred for something else to be investigated, and we then had to wait to proceed with the application until those investigations had been completed and a diagnosis made. There's no point applying for life insurance with any investigations pending.

p.s. I'm really sorry to hear what you're going through. I had a lump investigated last year and I know how terrifying it is. Fingers crossed it turns out not to be something serious.
