Boston (or nearby) hotels

Good morning.

I wondered if anyone could advise on a decent hotel in the Boston area as my searching has shown how eye watering expensive they can be!

We're hoping to stay there at the start of October at the start of a New England road trip. We'll probably want 3 (maybe 4) nights in Boston before we set off.

So I was wondering if anyone knew of any gems which would offer a good location for getting downtown via public transport. I have got a car booked so free parking is also important. However, if convenient enough I could change the car so we pick it up when we leave Boston (we did this in DC, took airport shuttle to hotel and then took airport shuttle back to airport to pick up car).

Thanks for any help in advance.

Anywhere near the rail line up to 30 miles away from Boston is good as the trains are reasonably priced and regular, I'm not sure if the parking prices have changed but the train station carparks were very cheap when I was there about 10 years ago ($4 all day)

    ps
Science museum is a good half day out :)

Have you looked at Priceline or Hotwire?

Many moons ago we got the 4* Boston Logan Hilton and used the subway to get to downtown for 3 days. Then picked up the hire car and left.

I stayed a couple of times at the Comfort Inn Revere. It was always much cheaper than staying in the City.

Shuttle bus from the airport or free parking on site. You can get the T Rail into Boston from Revere and also good access to drive off north bound for your New England tour.

we recently stayed in Backbay area of Boston, at the Charlesmark hotel. It was a good location, metro just outside, and the backbay express from the airport stops just outside too, which was $5 each way. I've heard parking is very expensive in Boston, we arrived by plane from Buffalo, took the bus to the hotel, then when we moved on bus back to airport, and picked up the hire car at the airport.

We were upgraded to a bigger room, it wasn't huge, but perfectly nice.

I'd do a search of the board as I recall a thread on this subject earlier in the year, if I remember correctly quite a few people recommended staying in Cambridge.

Yes, I usually stop in Cambridge when in the Boston area. It's cheaper than downtown Boston but still easily accessible and there is a lot going on in the local area.

Mind you, Cambridge still won't be cheap in October either. If you are on a really tight budget then you'd have to look further out of town.

If staying in downtown Boston you really don't need a car - parking is expensive, it's a wonderful walking city and the T is great for getting around.
If you have an early or late departure I would recommend the Hilton Logan airport (we like the runway view). You can get the river taxi downtown or the courtesy bus to the T terminal - you can just walk over the sky bridge back to the terminal where you can sort out your car hire. This is not a cheap option however.
I like to stay downtown when I am there - there are often deals on travelzoo, Priceline etc.
You could minimise the number of nights you actually stay in Boston to save money - especially as you have a car booked - do what you want to in the city and then stay a short distance out out on your way to your destination - if you were heading north Danvers or Saugus is a good stopping point ( and lots of lovely places to visit nearby - Salem, rock port, Gloucester etc).
Lucky you - it's a great time of year to visit

Yes, a car is a waste of time and money in central Boston (and Cambridge) as everywhere is accessible by foot or public transport. It's one of the most walkable cities in the US. Just spend a few days there then pick up a car on your way out.
