Pebbledash side of garage - how to cover up ?

We have a prefabricated garage - one side of which was pebbledashed long before it was ours. It's really ugly and am trying to decide the best way of covering it up. Have thought about spray painting it. Or perhaps rendering and then painting it ?
Has anyone done this. Any advice? Any other ideas for how I can deal with it?
Thanks
PS I did think about covering it with a climbing plant but a joiner I know has advised against trying to screw battens into it to fit supports (he says I'm risking splitting it )

I would try painting it first (cheapest option) and if it still looks bad then get it rendered0
