New asparagus

Planted male asparagus seeds last year, planting them out in the autumn following all recommendations. This year the spears have come up and as recommended we did not cut them but they are very thin and look just like asparagus fearns, nothing like you put on your plate.
Are things going to improve next year, am I fretting needlessly, anyone been through this?
The only thing that is constant is change.

I'm no expert, but I'm a year ahead of you, and I had the same thing last year (each plant sent up a few weak-looking spears, which went ferny). This year, I had some fatter spears, and cut a few for eating. They're now growing out into fronds again. On that basis, I hope they'll be even better again next year, and I'll get a few more spears. It's pretty low yield, though; I planted nine crowns, and have about three small meals-worth after two years. And I've lost one of the crowns over the second winter...

From crowns, you really shouldn't pick anything until the second year and then only a few to taste.

Never tried from seed, but I would think that would add a couple of years to the above, so 3 or 4 years before you get a crop.

Asparagus is a long term commitment...
