Hi All
My current accountant has been getting steadily more expensive whilst reducing the service and I'm looking around..

I have found another smaller accountant who has said they can offer the same service but for a significant reduction in costs (this is a small outfit as opposed to my other accountant who has many staff).

My problem is what do I look for professionally? The new potential accountant is ACMA & CGMA qualified. I've tried to look these up to confirm this is an industry standard for advise on business/tax etc (I'm a sole trader about to go Ltd)...

should I be looking for other qualifications??

The most common bodies qualified accountants belong to in the UK are the ACCA, ICAEW and AAT.

This is my point, as this does not really mean anything to Joe Public. I've tried to get a overview of qualifications but its by no means clear.

Just anxious I'm not taken in by Mickey Mouse qualifications that you can buy on the Internet for a tenner!

ACMA/CGMA is the qualification from CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) and is certainly not a "mickey mouse" qualification.

While generally speaking CIMA qualified accountants tend to work more in companies rather than practices, it has become more common to see qualified CIMA accountants in practice over the last few years.
