£140 for 04 Fiesta Silencer/Middle exhaust

Local garage has just quoted me, and I accepted as I'm an idiot, this to replace the back box and middle section of my exhaust....plus clamps. As it's started sounding like a Subaru Impreza due to it blowing, just without the same performance :D

Just wondering if this is a bit steep? As the internet seems to suggest it might be a touch rich.

1.4 Zetec / 2003 model (thread topic is wrong).

Thanks.

  • Euro Car Parts list a centre link pipe for £38.49 and the backbox for £37.49. Plus maybe an hours labour so you're looking at around £120ish. £140 doesn't seem excessively expensive.

Sounds reasonable to me. That's similar to what I've paid to have bits of the exhaust on my Fiesta replaced.

Even with a proper workshop, it's a dirty job involving general fiddling (and sometimes grinding and hammering), so I don't begrudge paying for a bit of labour.

Prices now are roughly the same as they were 5 years ago at local indie garages.

We have also just had a quote of around £110 for 02 Punto exhaust.

I also paid £35 fitted for centre pipe section on a Pug 206 2 years ago at an indie garage.

I had a Moggy Minor when i was 17 and got a new exhaust fitted in one of those exhaust places that were offering a lifetime guarantee. A couple of years later the exhaust began to blow and i went back, receipt and guarantee in hand. I was expecting they may try to worm their way out of it so i'd planned what i was going to say very carefully.
He gets underneath and comes out to ask exactly what i wanted. So i says i don't want anything replaced that doesn't need it, but if it's gone i suppose it has to be done. Then i said, i'll leave it to you if you think it needs renewing them do it. After the job was done and he motioned me to the office to pay i pulled out the guarantee.
I thought he was going to keep me prisioner, he kept saying only part of the exhaust had gone and i could hhave that free but the guanantee didn't cover the rest 'cos it wasn't broken. And i'm telling him i asked for only what he thought needed replaceing. Finally after a long long time he let me go but said never to come there again.
