Buying new car and insurance

Hi. I'm looking to sell my car privately before buying another. It's obviously not practical to sell my car and buy a new one straight away (ie the same day) so there will be a period of probably a few days where I will be without a car. I would normally just ring my insurance and swap the reg etc but what happens if I haven't picked my new car yet? Would I have to cancel the policy and start again from scratch? Or can they 'hold' the policy in a fashion?

Check with your insurer before the event.

Some do insist the policy ends if no vehicle is covered.

So find out and plan accordingly!

Check with your insurer. Last time I was in that situation, they allowed me two weeks to find a new car. Since I didn't find the right one within that time, I ended up cancelling anyway.

I've got a viewing on my car on thursday so will see how that goes before I make the call.

What company was that with please Ectophile? I'm with LV and they normally seem ok when I've had to make changes in the past.

Whatever you decide ensure your insurance company is fully aware you no longer want insurance on your old car. If the new buyer has an accident your insurance could come into affect.
