How best to exfoliate for smoother skin? Also - name a good mitt to use for fake tan!

I seem to be getting rougher skin / little bumps on my arms and legs - I'm guessing these are ingrown hairs perhaps, from epilating?
I'd like to sort this out, especially since I'm considering trying out some gradual tanning lotion this Summer, which obviously requires skin to be smooth in order to produce an even result.
Has anyone got any recommendations as to effective products they like to use? Any particular mitts or scrubs that do a great job?
Also as per the title - is there a mitt you'd recommend me to invest in, for applying tanning lotion successfully?
I'm a tad clueless in this! Don't want a bumpy streaky fake tan disaster on my hands
Many thanks in advance

I'm not an expert however St Ives Body scrub is really good value for money

St Tropez mitt is the only one I have used and I think it is good but I can't compare obviously as I haven't used others
I do use St Tropez in Shower gradual tan, I'm fair skinned so works for me but a weak color for some other people
