Does anyone know what this plant is?

I posted this on another board, but was advised to come on here and ask. :)

This plant has just literally appeared in my garden, like, 6-8 weeks ago, and it's not looking like a plant now, as much as a small tree! (It's about 18-20 inches high.)

It has quite a sturdy 'trunk.' I am sure it isn't a weed.

Anyone know what it is?

One of the euphorbia (spurge), maybe Euphorbia wallichii or palustris. They can get quite substantial.

    Oooooh, than you for that.

I have just looked into this on google and it does look quite a bit like it actually.

    Thank you. :)

I am going to go look into this a bit more now. :)

FYI, some people find the milky sap of spurge a strong skin irritant.

Don't just say Ewwwwwww! Euphorbia sap can be really nasty (more than just a skin irritant), especially for eyes.

No need to worry unless you start pulling bits off the plant - but if you do, and you get sap on your hands, wash well before touching/rubbing your eyes.

Other than that they're really rather impressive plants! Some are very fast growing from seed - which might explain why yours appeared so unexpectedly.

Edited to add - looks more akin to Leafy Spurge, Euphorbia esula, to me. That's a mainland Europe species, though it appears now and then in the UK as a naturalised species and is sometimes deliberated cultivated (interestingly it's a problem weed in N America)

    Double Ewwwww? That better? :D

    I'm only kidding!

I am very grateful for your help and all this information, thank you!!!

I shall be very careful not to touch the sappy stuff.

Oh by the way, is this plant dangerous for pets?

Pets are unlikely to touch it, I should think - they must smell inedible as mine are never eaten by insects/slugs and the deer (before we erected an electric fence) would eat everything in my garden except euphorbias. While euphorbias are striking plants, it was pretty dull having nothing else...

nb. My tortoises never tried to eat them either.

As country children we knew about spurges. If you wanted to be in our gang you had to suffer for the honour, so a touch of sap on the tongue was required.

Your mouth burned like mad for around an hour, but it was worth it!

Nowadays kids try extract from the Coca plant, shows how times have moved on in the world of flora and fauna ;)

Maybe, but I remember a few 'extracts' being consumed on the school bus as well. We were 11-12 and it was 1960.

Times don't change that much! :rotfl:
