Finding Private plate number owner details

I was looking for some private plate numbers and found one that it's currently being used on a car. Note: the private plate number I am referring to is not being sold on any website (dvla etc)
My question is whether is possible to find the owner of the vehicle that is using it and persuade the person to sell it maybe if they are interested.
On the gov website I can request owner's info but only if I have a reasonable cause. My reason is obviously not related to any accident/theft/illegal parking etc.... so the question is, what options do I have?
thank you

If you know a friendly Police Officer that doesnt mind committing offences in the Data Protection Act, then you have an option.

If you see it parked up somewhere, stick a note under the windscreen wipers.

legally you have no way of finding out the details of a registered keeper of a particular vehicle

as you are aware the DVLA will sell the details of registered keeper to private parking companies and the like but you do not have a genuine case to request details

All you can do is look on ASKMID and find out what car/van/bike its currently on. Go on DVLA to see if its MOT'd and VED'd.

Then you can post up on some forums of the same make/model and see if anyone on there knows the owner.

If its an odd plate on a distictive car then you may get a hit. Once the owner knows that you want the plate, expect to pay over the odds for it, but you knew that anyway, assuming they want to sell it in the first place.

Good lucks, I think you will need them!

Thank you guys, I know it was a long shot, thought I'll ask around if someone knows anything more about it.
I already have done the dvla search of the registration and know which car it is. the idea of putting a note on the windscreen would be useful if I knew the location of the car :)
  • nice information

May as well commit the crime yourself by falsifying a reason and getting it directly from the DVLA, never heard of them asking for evidence to substantiate the reason for the name and address.

Assuming you've never seen the car, dont want to commit a possible offence and just like the reg then your only chance is to post on forums etc and see if anyone happens to know the owners

Write to the DVLA and tell them the car is parked on your land quite frequently and you would like their details so you can write to them.

Or you could do a HPi check to find out how many owners the car has had then write to the DVLA for keeper details to say you are interested in 'buying' the car but would like to speak to the previous owners to discuss its background etc.

As force ten says, there is no legal way of doing this aside from contacting as many owner forums as you can and 'asking around'. Extra-legally, you can lie to DVLA about the parking thing, or claim an accident where the owner drove off without leaving details, but if either of these got back to the owner he/she will hardly be in the mood to co-operate over a possible sale of the number.

I recently came across an old photo of a bike I used to own, and which I would desperately like to buy back. I had forgotten the reg number, but this was clear in the photo. I tried sending all the appropriate forms and covering letters to DVLA, but to no avail. Even as a former owner, able to quote the dates of ownership and the registered address at the time, it was impossible. I registered with both the major owners' clubs and posted on all the forums, but nothing. Very sad, and I have now given up.

OP, unless you are prepared to go a little extra-curricular, I don't think you are going to get anywhere.

Thanks a lot guys, all of your comments are really appreciated.

As some of you suggested, there are a few ways to do this but slightly cheeky but repercussion could be damaging; I don't what could happen if dvla finds out that the car was never parked in front of my house; additionally I don't want to make use of a "severe" lie such as saying that an accident was involved.

I like the excuse of contacting previous owners which I think is genuine and don't think will have any side effects, I can simply say that I am interested in the car.
    Might give that a go.
