If I want to view a car and buy it on the same day privately, what do I do about the tax as it no longer comes with the car and I would like to drive it home.
Thanks

Perfect.
Big Thanks0 -
if you do buy make sure you use the number on the new keeper slip and pray that dvla dont still get it wrong
i think dvla are heading to meltdown again after dealings ive had this past month
watchdog are doing a piece next week0 -
Reading mugwumps link, isn't the car taxed until the seller notifies the DVLA? A private seller should be able to drive home a taxed car as surely it's still taxed until the DVLA process the paperwork?0

I bought a used car late October just after the tax change. Taxed it online and the whole process was straightforward and painless.
Although I still feel odd when I see no disc.
Apart from the £275 VED.
That stung a bit!0 -

Where did you Tax it?
Before driving the car home?
On your Phone/Tablet?
Used the Car Dealers or Sellers Computer/Phone/Tablet?
Some other way?(New) AIM: MF within 5 years or less

Exactly. But let's not let fine details like that spoil the umpty-hundredth similar thread.
let me throw a very large spanner in your thinking here
about 6 years ago i sold a car at 9.45am in the morning and as usual i got the purchaser to sign my receipt and also confirm the time to the minute she was driving away from my premises,a few weeks later i got a NIP for a speeding offence for this very vehicle less than 45 minutes later than whenst it was driven away.
Who would stand for the nip in a case like this because if you argue it was the new keeper then why were they in your car ?did you give permission ?were they actually insured because lets be honest here people seem to lose all reason when buying s/h cars and think its alright to insure them once they have driven them home and kicked the tyres again
To summarise anyone would be mad not to get a receipt written out and all details written down by both parties as an agreement before new keeper drives off into the sunset of claim Britain and its hatted keepers of the purse strings0 -

With the speeding ticket...
You have a signed and dated V5C, and - probably - a signed, dated and timed receipt.
They, by the time the NIP comes through, will be on the way to being registered at DVLA as the keeper, effective date that on the V5C. But, of course, the only information required is "Who was driving?". They were. End of.
Whereas, with the tax...
You sell it. That triggers a tax refund from the end of the current month.
The buyer taxes it when they get home. That tax is valid from the start of the current month.0 -
