I want to grow carrots in a trough that is about 6" deep. Is that deep enough or should I use large flower pots?

I don't think that's deep enough. You could try boosting the height with lengths of drainpipe, which is what the competition growers use, with plenty of sand in the compost mix.

It'll work fine unless you want really long carrots. They just keep growing until they hit the bottom.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I grew carrots in a large containner a couple of years ago I thought that the conditions would suit them better because I added a lot of sharp sand to the compost, strangely they grew smaller and had less taste than the ones I grew in the ground.

Try one of the round carrot varieties like Parmex. There are several and they are easily available.
  • We grew fantastic little Chantenay carrots in a 6 inch deep bed last year and they were fine - nice and chunky and about 4-5 inches. This year I'm growing a load in a trough that's about 7 inches deep and hoping for success again.
