Problem with 34,000 mile Audi A3 2011 gearbox!

I bought a new A3 (SE 138TDI, 1968cc) in September 2011 which has been serviced by Audi.
Mileage to date 34,000 miles. It has just developed a noise when driving so had a mechanic friend look at it and he believes it is either a problem with a bearing in the gearbox or differential bearing. Either way it is serious. Warranty expired September 2014. Next course of action will be to contact Audi and get it looked at by dealership. Anyone had any similar experience? Fearing going to Audi garage as suspect they will give me a whopping great bill just to take a look and then charge a fortune to rectify the issue. Dreading the battle and just hope that Audi's customer service dept. will cover this as goodwill gesture? Any advice? (had major problem with previous TT so not happy at all with Audi's!

Take it to audi to establish the problem, if they won't do it as a good will gesture take it to an independent or your friend.

Audi goodwill? Good luck with that...
However you have nothing to lose by asking.

Audi will usually look at goodwill, but it usually depends on having a full dealer service history, and you will have to pay. initially at least for diagnosis.
