well as the may bank holiday approaches if the weather is kind i may spring clean the car

my car is silver and whilst it always cleans up nice it never really looks really shiny, I have some product that i have used in the past like autoglym resin polish and extra gloss sealant and i have an old tin of wax that i find hard work

I know many swear by a wax finish and pay lots of money for top name waxes but that is not what i am after as my 2005 mondeo zetec will never be a show car

so what products do you all use to make your daily drivers look nice and shiny?

    In the same boat.

I did some research on the best waxes and polishes.

checking a couple of valeting sites, this polish seems to judge edge the auto glym product...

According to AutoExpress, this comes out as the top wax

I ordered some applicator pads also.

You may wish / need to clay bar your car before you start to remove impurities, but i didnt order one as my van is freshly painted.

hate to say it but cheaper waxes don't last as long as expensive ones.

I stick to carnuba waxes, rather than resin type waxes as I find carnuba easier to remove that's my personal preference but will use a resin if im too lazy to polish out swirls as it will fill them in.

I use maguiars deep shine carnuba wax step 3 £7.99 is the price I pay for it, although I don't bother with steps 1 and 2 products as a step in to replenish wax layers.

When its time towards end of summer, i'll use different line of products to protect it going through winter/spring.

    winter protection I use:
Decontaminate the paint- a strip down of previous waxes and sealants, clay bar paint, use a light cutting polish to remove love marks and swirls.
Apply meguiars sealant and leave on 48 hours.

    buff that off.

then apply super resin wax from G3 OR I may go over it with a G3 supergloss carnuba wax paste. depending on how things shape up towards that stage as a resin wax will fill in imperfections, carnuba wont.

ive had good result just using meguiars sealnt with a deep shine gloss polish by autoglym, then wax over with meguiars deep crystal carnuba wax. this seems to be the cheapest, but lasting results ive had from low-mid range products.

I use G3 applicator pads, £5.99, I bought microfiber towels and microfiber flannels off amazon for a few £££. I use the white g3 pad closed cell to polish, use the black ones to seal and wax.

This is Money Saving Expert right?

    So here is my advice:

I have to draw a balance between looking good and over the top hard work, and super expensive products that don't give a proportionate improvement in appearance

I only polish my car twice a year these days - Spring and Autumn when the clocks change and I swap the tyres from Summer to Winter and so on.

After you have washed your car as best you can - with whatever shampoo you fancy I'd recommend going over any nasty scratches or swirls with Farcla G3 Scratch remover - the liquid one in a bottle - not the cream one in a tube.

Any tar spots you can remove with Autoglym Tar Remover or Tardis.

The Autoglym Super Resin Polish you have already got is perfect for silver cars.

Afterwards seal the surface with the Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection.

If you want to go over that with a straight wax product then do so - but to me it's not necessary. The EGP on top of the SRP lasts for 6 months easily and it still beads the rain well enough for me.

The above work will leave plenty time for having a seat and a glass of wine/beer/cider or whatever takes your fancy.

Just don't go driving afterwards.

    Have a happy May holiday.

ice that sounds very much my kind of car care, I want best results for as little hard work as possible and a sit down with a nice magners or bulmers over ice is drink i would choose

atrixblue.-MFR sounds like a good routine but not really my thing, I know they say that the preparation and hard work put into the cleaning and polishing stage gives best results when the wax is applied, but I own a 10 year old work horse not a show car

motorguy I have thought about getting clay bar and yes my car needs it badly, i saw a thing that was called a clay mitt in halfords the other day, are they any good

my super resin polish and autoglym extra gloss sealant do a good job and give good protection and applying is not to hard but the resin polish can be a bit dusty

How old is your bottle of AG SRP?

They changed the formula a year or so ago and the latest stuff is nothing like so white dust producing as before.

Don't forget Halfrauds 3 for 2 discount offer on all cleaning products.

it is probably about 18 months old, i bought it on a halfords 3 for 2 offer and it is the litre bottle so still has lots left in it

I think my halfords 3 for 2 pick 18 months ago were all autoglym one super resin polish one extra gloss protection and half a gallon of autoglym shampoo conditioner, and that is the only thing i have used up other two still have loads left in them

at present the shampoo i am using is Simoniz Protection Car Wash Shampoo as i got a gallon from halfords on offer for a tenner so much cheaper than the autoglym stuff
