Confused by Tax on new (used) car

Hi,

I'm going to look at a car on Saturday that I'm interested in.

I asked about tax and the dealer said he can tax it before I get here, as the post office will be closed not something I want to do as I may not like it when I see it and that will just be a waste.

Or he said he can give one day coverage and I can drive it home and tax myself.

Thing I'm confused about is do I need to go to the post office to do this or can I do it online? The dealer said the car is classed as tax disabled(?). So needs to be done at the post office, this doesnt make sense to me, surely I can just tax it online, which I would much rather do as I prefer to pay monthly

How he's proposing to tax the car for one day for you, I don't know.

In any case, if it's on disabled tax class it'll be a PO job. I did it myself in February, it's easy enough. Take the whole V5 with you, fill in a form, PO sends off the V5 and a few weeks later you get a V5 in the post.

You don't have to pay for tax in a lump sum at the PO, you know. You can fill in a DD form there.

    Ah thank you for that.

Do you still get the 5 days grace? Just thinking with getting around on Sunday and to work/to the post office on Monday.

The grace period was purely for displaying a renewed tax disc, not for when buying a vehicle. The vehicle will have no tax so you cannot drive it on the road without trade plates (or to a pre booked MOT before some pedants pop out of the woodwork :o)

There have NEVER been five days grace. Vehicle is either taxed, or it isn't.

The only 'grace period' was on the display of the tax disc back when we had them, and then only if you had purchased tax online/via phone and it hadn't arrived.

Using a vehicle on the road without valid tax (including the correct taxation class for its use) is an offence, full stop (unless untaxed driving to a pre-booked MOT).
